Homeopathy is a system of medicine, which works on the principle of like curing like (Similimum, Similibus, Curentor). Therefore a substance, which can cause poisoning symptoms in a healthy person, can cure similar symptoms experienced by a sick person.
An example would be the homeopathic remedy Arnica Montana (the Fall Herb). Arnica is a plant, which if ingested, poisons a person by causing haemorrhaging, cerebral congestion, aching, bruising among some of the symptoms. Arnica is a commonly known remedy given to children when they fall and bruise themselves or bang their heads. It is also commonly given in or after childbirth where it reduces the bruising and swelling. Post-natally it can be given for after-pains. Arnica is a key first aid remedy and should be in most peoples’ first aid kits.
What can Homeopathy treat?
Homeopathy can treat many medical conditions, from headaches to menstrual problems (including PMT), urinary problems such as cystitis, skin complaints such as eczema, sleep problems, recurrent colds, asthma, as well as seasonal complaints such as hay fever. Homeopathy can help to heal broken bones and improve teeth problems, but it is not an alternative to the Dentist or the Casualty department.
On an emotional level, Homeopathy helps many situations from anxiety to depression, fears (for example visiting dentists, fear of flying, the dark, animal’s etc.) and with conditions such as PMS.
A first appointment is usually approximately an hour and a half, depending on the patient and the complaint (slightly less for a child). Follow-up consultations are usually 20 to 40 minutes.
The better the homeopath understands the patient, the better will be the prescription and therefore the healing can taken place in an optimum time.
All information revealed to a homeopath is confidential.
The human body seeks to externalise disease to dislodge it from more serious internal levels to more superficial external levels, thus a patient with asthma may develop a short term skin rash or other symptom as part of the curative process. Healing proceeds in the reverse order of the appearance of symptoms, which is why it is important for a homeopath to get a reasonably good idea of the order of appearance of symptoms.
What are the remedies like?
Homeopathic remedies are different from medication you receive from the doctor. According to your needs you are likely to receive the medicine in two forms - a liquid or a tablet. The tablets are composed mainly of sugar, and thus are acceptable to almost everyone. Homeopathic remedies are absorbed into the body in the mouth and need to be dissolved under the tongue - not swallowed whole. You may be surprised to receive only 2 or 4 tablets as your first prescription.
How long will I need treatment for?
This is a commonly asked question, to which there is no set answer. To a large extent, the length of your treatment will depend on the severity of your problem and your degree of health. I like to see all my patients once a month to six weeks usually for the first three sessions, often at the end of this time they are a lot better and don’t need such regular contact. However, I tailor the length of time between visits to each patient.
What if I’ve seen a homeopath before and wish to change?
If it is less than 7 years your homoepath will still have your notes. You need to contact them and ask them to forward your notes to me. If that is not possible then I will have to re-take your case needing a full appointment.
The 45 minute follow-up will be needed if your notes are available so we have enough time to update your case information and .to allow time for me to familiarise myself with your case. I will need to have the notes in advance of your appointment
